The Spa at Essex: An Honest Review

In the little New England village of Essex lays a beautiful colonial resort and spa. The resort is tucked away and yet still in a location that makes it easy for guests to get to other Vermont amenities. I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy 2 full spa days within the last 4 months. Nothing makes a girl feel more pampered than a day dedicated solely to her body and mindfulness.

This review will start with the things I was dissatisfied with first, namely the salon. Both times I’ve been to Spa at The Essex I’ve received a shampoo and style and both times I felt the hairdresser wasn’t listening to what I wanted. My hair is baby-fine and the hairdresser continuously added product after product to give me volume (which I do need) however my hair was straw for the next 3 days. This past time I went I made sure to show her a picture of what I wanted and she still found it difficult to accomplish. After she was finished I had to start rearranging my hair and flattening it, I asked for loose beach waves with texture and she missed the mark completely. The other ladies in my party were also displeased with their hair experience.

Another issue with the salon is the lack of professionalism. If you want customers to pay top dollar for salon services you need stylists with quality skills and a professional demeanor. All of the ladies in my spa party were aggravated with the tone the salon workers had and the constant up-selling of their products. Good quality products sell themselves and should be available to the client, however if you haven’t started my shampoo and style you shouldn’t try to sell hair products to me. That’s not only tacky but it defeats the purpose of the spa, to relax.

Spa at the Essex is a beautiful and quaint spa from the moment you walk in the door. The smell of lavender engulfs you as soon as you enter. The colors are warm and inviting and the receptionist is always welcoming. The products that they use fill the lobby in an attractive way that makes you want to take a look before you start the day of relaxation. Many of their products are natural and or made in Vermont. The women’s locker room is well equipped with showers, changing rooms, lockers, sauna, and steam-room.

The true test for me with a spa is the quality of the massage. Both massages I’ve received have not disappointed. The massage therapists are professional and thorough. If you are looking for a way to unwind I would recommend one of their custom massages.

I want to also pay tribute to the delightful maple latte’s that I had during my services at Spa at The Essex. The maple latte gave me life after my massage, it was by far one of the best maple latte’s I have ever had. It was extremely convenient to order drinks and food to have in-between spa services and the quality was evident.

In the end I think Spa at The Essex is a picturesque spa that is worth checking out. I recommend using the amenities that they have to offer and grabbing a maple latte (or 2) and sticking with spa services that steer clear of the salon. If you want a spa that feels like Vermont, Spa at the Essex is for you.
