The Vermont Knitting Company
We bonded over Frye boots and motherhood.
The ladies of The Vermont Knitting Company aren’t your average Vermont knitters. Leslie and Kelsey are both native New Yorkers who migrated to Vermont in their early twenties, one for college and the other for love. A hobby that began as a generational tradition grew into a passion for Leslie who then taught her new coworker and friend Kelsey. They began knitting items for friends and then friends of friends and in 2015 they began their Etsy shop.
The shop has grown over the years, no doubt because of their quality product; however, the girls credit their success to their close-knit (pun intended) Instagram community. The Vermont Knitting Company’s Etsy shop has continued to flourish with their most popular products being the Mansfield Cowl and the Stowe Basket. Now, as their business grows they’ve become inspired by the state that they call home, Leslie dreams, “Someday, we would love to be able to use yarn that exclusively comes from Vermont.” The quality of the yarn is superior and some Vermont yarn will list which farm it came from and the sheep’s name. This Vermont exclusive yarn dream is within reach for the young women once they’ve expanded the business even further. With higher quality products comes a higher price. The main issue with Vermont yarn is the cost, and in order to be Vermont exclusive they would have to increase their prices substantially and that’s a leap that they may take very soon.
Vermont has welcomed these native New Yorkers with open arms, “We love the sense of community that comes with living in Vermont. Everyone we meet at local craft fairs is so welcoming and warm.” says Kelsey. They can work on their craft anywhere and love the versatility of Vermont, from the outdoor sports to the wineries and breweries that are scattered throughout the state. Both of the girls credit their love for Vermont to the beautiful scenery and the opportunity for outdoor fun. Kelsey states, “I grew up on the other side of Lake Champlain and still being so connected to something that I love, while also getting to enjoy Burlington has been one of the best parts of Vermont for me.”
The Vermont Knitting Company is exploring local boutiques to stock their gorgeous hand crafted pieces. You can find their pieces at Birdfolk Collective both in Waterbury and Winooski, and online at their Etsy shop. Keep an eye out for these ladies and their growing company; someday you may see The Vermont Knitting Company in their own brick and mortar store! Make sure to check out their Instagram as well!
