Places to Go: Jericho, Vermont
Nestled beneath the gaze of Mount Mansfield lies the pastoral town of Jericho. Small town living and a rich history bring folks to make Jericho their home but what makes Jericho a fun town to visit?
I’ll begin with the rich historical aspects of Jericho. On your travels to Jericho you can visit the Old Red Mill which houses the Historical Society Museum, Snowflake Bentley Exhibit and craft shop. The Old Red Mill is bright and light as you enter and showcases photographs that take you back in time. The staff at The Old Red Mill are very knowledgeable and are more than happy to help you navigate through the history of Jericho.
Jericho also offers excellent restaurants. Jericho Café and Tavern offers farm to table cuisine with a Vermont flair and is centrally located right on Route 15. Joes Snack Bar is also conveniently located in the heart of Jericho and has been operating since 1950. Joes Snack bar offers American style food and is a historic gem that is only open from April to October.
Jericho also offers quaint specialty shops that can also be educational for non-native Vermonters. Snowflake Chocolates is a Jericho based chocolate shop that uses Vermont butter, cream and maple syrup to create small batches of delicious chocolates. The company name was inspired from the historical Wilson “Snowflake” Bentley. Palmer Lane Maple is a homey maple shop that sells maple candies, maple creemees, Palmer’s maple syrup, t-shirts, ornaments, and other Vermont made products. Both of these specialty shops are more than happy to chat with you about their rich history and are willing to educate you about their processes.
The beauty and the history that surround you as you go through Jericho is enough but to add to it Jericho also offers two beautiful options for hiking. Mills Riverside Park offers nice trails that begin with a walk across a beautiful covered bridge. And my personal favorite, Mobbs Valley, offers 5 miles of glorious trails that bring peace and calmness to your day.
Regardless of what you choose to do, Jericho Vermont will allow you to relax, unwind, and become one with the history and culture of this friendly town. My recommendation would be to come with your family, take a nice late morning walk on a trail of your choosing, enjoy a nice lunch at The Jericho Café and Tavern, head on over to The Old Red Mill, stop at Palmer Lane Maple for a creemee and take in this serene environment.
