Places to Go: The New Era of Stowe
The drive down Mountain Road in Stowe is nostalgic for me; I’ve seen the same resorts, inns and restaurants withstand the last 20 years, but with time change is instinctual. The idyllic village of Stowe has always been charming, however, if you’ve been there lately there is a contemporary vibe that’s intoxicating and it’s not from the plethora of breweries that surround Stowe.
I’ve visited Stowe frequently over the years and I was saddened to see how the recession hurt local businesses. When I came back to visit in the winter of 2015 I was stunned, the village had come back to life and brought a fresh vibe with it. The restaurant selection had increased tenfold and the gourmet coffee joints had me caffeinated the entirety of the trip (shout out to Black Cap Coffee). Idletyme brewery, McCarthy’s, Piecasso, and Plate are a few of our favorite restaurants that showcase a fusion of the old and new era of Stowe. The lack of big chain restaurants shows the level of commitment this town has for promoting local small businesses. The restaurants in Stowe are for townies and travelers alike, each establishment offers a comfortable and relaxed experience, which is the epitome of this new vibe.
All of you traditionalists don’t fret! Nostalgic shops like Stowe Mercantile and Shaw’s General Store are still a staple of this quaint village. Both shops offer traditional Vermont goodies that you expect however they have added new selections of products that are refreshed, chill, and current. The entire town feels modernized and contemporary and it keeps bringing me back for more.
Sure come to Stowe to go skiing or biking but make sure to pause and take in your surroundings. This alpine village is innovative and re-energized and has proven to be a staple in Vermont tourism. From the upscale hotel accommodations to restaurants that are a foodie’s paradise to outdoor activities that keep Stowe a hotspot year round you are bound to find something you fancy.
