Fact 1: Before becoming the 14th state, Vermont was once an independent country for 14 years. 

Fact 2: The Green Mountain State has more dirt roads than paved roads, with 8,696 miles of dirt roads and 7,105 miles of paved roads.

Fact 3: Vermont was once claimed by both New Hampshire and New York.

Fact 4: Vermont is derived from the French word for green mountain.

Fact 5: Mount Mansfield is the highest point in Vermont sitting at 1339 meters.

Fact 6: Vermont is the second least-populated state in the USA, the first being Wyoming. 

Fact 7: Vermont's' official state insect is the honeybee.

Fact 8: Vermont is famous for its maple syrup, duh! 

Fact 9: Basketball, hockey, snowsports, and soccer are Vermont's most popular sports.

Fact 10: Vermont was the only state without a Wal-Mart, until 1996. 

Fact 11: Chittenden, Vermont has 1,260 residents however, the town is 74.2 square miles making it the largest town by area in the state of Vermont. 

Fact 12: To preserve Vermont's natural beauty, billboards have been banned since 1968.
